OVERVIEW

The 5th Annual Black Education Panel Discussion is a dynamic gathering dedicated to celebrating the rich legacy of Black education in Detroit. Hosted at the Charles Wright Museum of African American History on May 17, 2025, this event will bring together educators, community leaders, parents, and students for a thought-provoking conversation on Black excellence, equity, social justice, and the historical impact of education in Detroit.

 

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with influential voices, explore the past, present, and future of Black education, and connect with like-minded individuals passionate about uplifting the community. The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, located in the heart of Detroit, is a cultural gem dedicated to celebrating and preserving the rich history and contributions of African Americans.

THE HISTORY

 Black Education and Excellence in Detroit. (Past-Present)

Dr. Charles H. Wright (1918–2002)

In 1965, he led the establishment of the Afro-American Museum, later named in his honor as the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Now we celebrate our 60th anniversary. This exhibition, presented as a first-person narrative by Dr. Wright, uses words, images, documents and objects to portray his extraordinary life and expansive legacy.

Damon J. Keith (1922–2019)

Federal judge who ruled against school segregation in Detroit, ensuring equal educational opportunities. The Charles H. Wright Museum is proud to debut a new gallery that honors the life and legacy of the Honorable Judge Damon J. Keith. The exhibition,“The Judge Damon J. Keith Exhibit”, is a timeline of the journey of Judge Keith's life,

Dr. Glenda Price

Dr. Price is an educator and former president of Marygrove College; she was the first African-American woman to serve in this position. Price also served as the president of the Detroit Public Schools Foundation and the American Society for Medical Technology. She also served as the Provost for Spelman College.

Dr. Curtis L. Ivery

Dr. Curtis L. Ivery is the Chancellor of the Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD). Under his leadership, WCCCD has expanded educational opportunities, particularly for Black Detroiters, with a focus on addressing the academic and workforce needs of the community. Dr. Ivery's vision emphasizes inclusivity, access to higher education, and bridging the gap between education and employment.

LOCATION & PARKING

  The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit offers parking in the Cultural Center lot behind the museum, accessible from John R. Street, for $7 per vehicle.

 

Metered street parking is also available along Warren and Farnsworth Avenues, and on Brush Street, with rates ranging from $1 to $2 per hour. Arrive early to secure good parking accommodations.
